Mark Hanslip is an improvising saxophonist and technologist based in the north west of England. His solo work augments his acoustic sound with a mix of off-the-shelf hardware, hand-written software and bespoke AI models. This hybrid setup allows him to build frameworks for experimentation with sound, slicing, recombining and mutating his playing in new ways. His solo work is a reflection of his love of improvised, jazz, ambient and experimental musics, a long-standing commitment to playing saxophone, and an obsession with the possibilities offered by new technologies.
Over his 20+ year playing career Mark has performed and recorded with many great improvising musicians, including Nate Wooley, Elliot Sharp, Evan Parker, Paul Dunmall, Mark Sanders, Tony Bianco, Paul Hession, Javier Carmona, Emil Karlsen, Federico Reuben, Andrew Cheetham, Dominic Lash, Olie Brice and Otto Willberg. He currently plays regularly with Liverpool-based free jazz group Kippers, Manchester-based organ trio Revival Room, drummer Johnny Hunter’s quartet and in ad-hoc formations.
He received a PhD in music from the University of York in 2024, in which he explored creative uses of deep learning technologies for modelling instrumental practice and improvisation. He is currently collaborating with the Intelligent Instruments Lab in Reykjavik, exploring the use of the RAVE architecture in electroacoustic performance.
