Post-Pollination – 8 August 2024

Henry McPherson, Maria Sappho, Colin Frank

“Formed in the depths of the covid-19 pandemic in the wilds of northeast Huddersfield, Post-Pollination are Henry McPherson (UK), Maria Sappho (USA), and Colin Frank (CA). As improviser/composer/instrument-builder hybrids, the group advocates trans-species improvised noise (and not-noise) for wellbeing, joy, and collective creativity. On 8th August, in their first trio outing since 2020, they will present: burbles, skrinkles, clomps, crash (!), wubwubwub, pewwww, crknckrncr, boinggg, and grgrgrgrgr through the medium of percussion, electromagnetic resonance, prepared autoharp, recorders, duck call, viola, and other agential objects.”

Henry McPherson is a composer, improviser, artist, and researcher from Herefordshire (UK). He creates music for live performance and concert, for stage and audiovisual media, as well as graphic scores and gallery pieces, texts and installations. Henry’s work often explores plant-human and more-than-human relationships, with the aim of cultivating inclusive listening and interspecies empathy in and through performance. He is interested in mosses and slow time, chattering insect textures, the lore of woodland monsters, and branching acoustic forms. His work has been performed/exhibited/broadcast at recently BBC R3 (late junction/Freeness), BBC iPlayer, hcmf// (2021), Dag in der branding festival (NL, 2019), and is available online on various streaming services.

Colin Frank is a percussionist, field recordist, installation artist, improviser, and multimedia composer. His works range from investigating found objects to machine noises, theatrical absurdity to site-specific performance, and audience interactivity to DIY electronics. His PhD dissertation at the University of Huddersfield, titled ‘Making With Agential Objects’, considered how unconventional instruments and objects influence his creative process. Colin creates installation and gallery pieces which are often interactive, from playing common objects to exploring virtual environments. His installations have been exhibited at Salem Art Works, Dai Hall, the Barbara Hepworth Building, and Analix Forever. He also works with businesses and organisations for public outreach projects, including in 2021 when he modified an upright piano with polystyrene and sound-responsive LEDs for the Leeds Piano Competition’s public piano trail. He worked with the architect firm Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios for the 2023 exhibition ‘Of Time and Place’ about Huddersfield’s Queensgate Market.
