Michael Perrett is, amongst other things, a musician based in Manchester.
He studied clarinet and composition at the RNCM. As a composer, he has written for EXAUDI and The House of Bedlam and his music has been performed internationally and broadcast on BBC Radio 3. As an improvisor he has collaborated with Otto Willberg, Sam Weaver, Ilan Volkov, Ecka Mordecai, Mark Hanslip and Dave Birchall. He is in the band Graham Llewellyn with the keyboardist/ composer Lawrence Dunn and the guitarist/ epicure Dave Bainbridge.
He has twice been shortlisted for the Observer/ Anthony Burgess Prize for Arts Journalism. He hasn’t won it yet.
Spring 2019 will see him traveling to Montreal for a period of study with Lori Freedman.
Rob Thorpe is an easily-distracted rock guitarist. Having versed himself in metal and prog rock, he jumped ship to contemporary music and free improvisation sometime in 2011.
In improvisational groups Rob usually plays an extended-range guitar to better support the bass register as the lowest instrument present. He is not scared by major chords.
He plays in a trio with Nina Whiteman and Simon Prince, none of whom are good at band names, so it’s called the Whiteman/Prince/Thorpe trio. His other groups Polar Institute and Octopus Mother play mixtures of minimalism, jazz and folk, and instrumental prog respectively.
